Intern Development Program - IDP

Completion of IDP is required of all new candidates for licensure registered with CAB after January 1, 2005.

  • Administered by NCARB – National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. http://www.ncarb.org/idp/
  • Interns must start a council record in order to submit IDP hours/reports for a cost $285 - You get a NCARB Council Record ID #
  • The application includes work history, educational transcript and must be notarized
  • At the beginning of each intern’s time at a company, they must submit an employment verification form to NCARB.
  • 700 Units needed in 16 Training Areas: 8hrs = 1 IDP Unit
  • Units must be reported within six months of completion. There are spreadsheets designed by NCARB to cumulatively track hours in each training area.
  • Each intern must have a supervisor (registered architect with daily supervision) and a mentor (may or may not be with the same company, should be registered) who each sign the quarterly report. Mentors should meet with interns at this time, thus meeting at least 4 times a year to review progress and future training goals.
  • IDP Handbook (Updated Yearly) for download.
  • Can take 4-12 weeks for council record to be initiated.
  • After the first three years, a $75 annual fee is required to keep record active.

EPC – Emerging Professional’s Companion – www.epcompanion.org

  • Besides logging hours in IDP, one can also gain credit by using the EPC.
  • Created in 2005 with input from a cross section of the architectural profession, it creates opportunities to earn IDP credit through supplemental case studies related to IDP training areas and activities.
  • Meant to reinforce/complement issues addressed in everyday work on a topic, not as a replacement for this experience.
  • Access to the EPC website, where the case studies are accessed, is free to all AIA and AIAS members as well as NCARB record holders.
  • Can earn up to 225 IDP Units, but these can only be counted as elective units (in a training area or overall) and not be used to fulfill the minimum requirements.
  • There are five topics, each with three case studies (total of 15) for each IDP training area. Each case study completed equals one IDP unit, regardless of the time it takes to complete the work. Each case study is downloaded from the EPC website.
  • Supervisor/Mentor should review the case study work, but IDP units for the work are self reported by the intern through the University of Oklahoma.
  • No direct costs associated with completing or receiving credit for EPC.
  • Reporting Address for IDP credithttps://app.ncarb.org/recordsvc/logon.asp
