2012 AIA National Convention Call for Delegates
2012 AIA National Convention and Design Exposition
Washington, DC
Walter E. Washington Convention Center
May 17 – 19, 2012
The upcoming May Convention will bring architecture professionals and building industry contributors together from around the country. The National AIA Convention is the year’s definitive focus on conditions and events that are shaping the future of the profession of architecture.
Convention registration is currently open on the National AIA web site. The AIA is offering free, conventional registration to new members.
The National Convention is also the annual occasion for electing National Officers of the Institute by vote of delegates that represent AIA Chapters in the US and worldwide. The Pasadena & Foothill Chapter is allotted up to 17 delegates based on total of 255 members who may cast votes for officers of the National AIA for coming year.
Qualifying and Voting
Each delegate must personally present one, signed delegate card to the staff at the accreditation desk during specified hours to become accredited and vote. Delegates must bring the delegate cards to convention and present them at the accreditation desk in order to be accredited and vote.
Delegate cards will be distributed prior to the convention.
Obtain Delegate Cards from Chapter President or Secretary
Anyone interested in attending the Convention in person and serving as a delegate should notify Fariba Shantiyai, Chapter President or Amy Hellmund, Chapter Secretary, before end of business on Monday, May 14 and obtain an authorization card signed by either the President or Secretary. Please call the Chapter office at 626.796.7601 or Fariba Shantiyai at 626.864.4876 for additional information.
Note that votes are lost (not cast) if a delegate accredits but does not vote.
Delegates to the AIA 2012 National Convention and Design Exposition will be able to vote for national officer candidates at the same time as accreditation. This means delegates can accredit and vote in one visit to the AIA Town Hall if they choose to do so. Delegates who prefer to accredit on Thursday, May 17 and defer voting until Friday, May 18, on the other hand, may do that. Accreditation and voting must both be completed, however, before 4:00 PM on Friday, May 18, 2012.
The accreditation desk, located in Booth 138 in the AIA Town Hall on the exhibit floor in Walter E. Washington Convention Center, will be open for accreditation and voting during the following hours:
Thursday, May 17 1:00 – 4:00 PM
Friday, May 18 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Runoff voting only: no accreditation
Saturday, May 19 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
The Official Delegate Information Booklet is available at the Chapter office for your review prior to your departure for the 2012 National Convention, Washington, DC. Please call Jill Nicholson, AIAPF Consulting Executive Director, at 626.796.7601 for additional information.

"Shortlist Interview Success: Presentation Building Blocks That Get You to #1”
A PROGRAM BY THE AIA PASADENA & FOOTHILL CHAPTER, SPONSORED BY PARSONS CORPORATION PASADENA.

ABOUT
This workshop is an invaluable tool for principals, design professionals, and marketing professionals who want to position themselves for the future and enhance their interview skills in the present to win more work. Consider industry trends which are shaping our profession. Lisa will first address how the profession is evolving and how best to position yourself and your firm to stay competitive in our ever changing environment of complex delivery models.
Next, Laverne will focus on what works now so that you and your team can capture the panel’s attention.
- Need more “C’s”? We’ll address strategies that make your team “concise,” “cohesive,” “connected,” and “clear.”
- Need more “P’s”? Join the discussion as we look at “preparation,” “polish,” “position,” and “personalized.”
- Presented techniques address all critical components: content, voice, delivery, visuals, and Q&A.
- You can use these techniques to strategize your brand and build your own skills or to coach your shortlist teams. Pick the building blocks that will work best for you, take them back to your firm and create an action plan to strengthen your teams and win more work.

Changes to AIA Continuing Education Requirements
On Dec. 9, 2011, the AIA Board of Directors voted to modify the AIA’s calendar year continuing education requirements to maintain the professional life-long learning standard. These changes are to ensure that AIA members master new knowledge and skills to meet the changing requirements of the profession.
Beginning this year, AIA members will be required to complete 12 hours of HSW education annually; previously 8 HSW hours were required. The total number of continuing education hours required remains unchanged at 18 hours, which includes 4 hours of sustainable design (SD) education. The AIA Board will re-evaluate the SD requirement later this year.
