Backyard Stealth (# 258)

Backyard Stealth

Site:  Backyard of a Mediterranean house in a city well-known for mandating traditional styles.

Program:  Shade structure, fountain, and swimming pool.

Client’s wish:  Contemporary architecture that “fits in.”

Solution:  A collection of sensitively designed elements that stand in productive dialogue with their surroundings.

Shade Structure:  The triangular shade structure creates a focal point for the yard.  The angle of its roof angle addresses the backyard entrance commonly used by the client’s children and friends.  Its sculptural form is just visible from the public street, a gentle critique of the city’s codes.  The structure’s white plaster blends with that of the adjacent houses.

Fountain:  The rectilinear fountain contrasts with the triangular roof of the shade structure.  The craftsmanship of its concrete is consistent with the quality of the best traditional structures.  The soothing sound of its falling water masks the incessant hum of the pool equipment.
