Oculus is an aggregated cluster housing complex in Frogtown, Los
Angeles. This project is inspired by Yona Friedman’s ideology of
“Spatial City” which avoids disrupting existing conditions by erecting
the modular units within a megastructure above the original city. Oculus
is parasitic with its base units latching onto existing buildings and
aggregating upward much like “Spatial City”. Oculus takes over the
island block of commercial buildings, hiding them below and blending the
block back into the residential community. Rather than demoing existing
conditions to make up for green space, the project transforms flat
rooftops into roof gardens. The existing park is evolved to include a
plaza for communal congregation and accommodate pets. Oculus introduces a
mix used lifestyle to the community.
